Hassane Kolingar Reveals Heart Attack After Using Snus at Teammate's Wedding

French rugby international Hassane Kolingar has shared the shocking incident that led to him suffering a heart attack at just 26 years old. The Racing 92 loose-head prop, who has recently returned to play, had feared for his career when he went into cardiac arrest during a teammate's wedding.

Kolingar recounted the terrifying experience to Midi Olympique, explaining that he had used snus— a form of smokeless tobacco— while waiting for the bride and groom. “When I got there, I stuck a snus against my gum and sat down,” he recalled. Snus is a moist tobacco pouch held in the mouth, releasing nicotine into the bloodstream.

Although not illegal, Kolingar described the tobacco as “real s**t,” adding that things took a dangerous turn when he began to laugh. “At one point, I burst out laughing and immediately felt pressure in my chest. My heart was beating really hard, and I was sweating a lot; I was seeing stars."

Believing it was a hypoglycemic episode, Kolingar moved aside to avoid ruining the ceremony. But things quickly escalated. “My eardrums were banging, and I felt like someone was sticking needles in my head,” he explained. “I was in pain, really bad pain, and my eyes were rolling back. I was going into cardiac arrest.”

Kolingar suffered tachycardia, a condition where the heart rate increases dramatically. His pulse wouldn't slow down, prompting firefighters to induce a coma to stabilize him. “To wake me up, they shocked me four times,” he shared.

The heart attack was linked to a scar Kolingar had on his heart since birth. To address it, he underwent a significant operation, which involved deliberately inducing another cardiac arrest in order to clean the scar tissue.

Despite the harrowing experience, Kolingar has now returned to the pitch, grateful for his recovery and determined to continue his rugby career.
