Naomi Osaka Reveals Panic Over LA Wildfires, Shares Emotional Story of Protecting Daughter’s Birth Certificate
Naomi Osaka has opened up about the terrifying proximity of last week's devastating wildfires to her Los Angeles home, which was just three blocks away from the flames. The Japanese tennis star, currently competing in the Australian Open, shared her panic after learning how close the fires were to her $8.6 million property in the Tarzana neighborhood.
In an emotional post-match interview after her first-round victory over France’s Caroline Garcia, Osaka revealed that she had someone retrieve her daughter’s birth certificate from the house, fearing it could be destroyed in the blaze. "I was watching the fire map, and the fire is like three blocks from my house," Osaka said. "So, I had someone go and get my daughter's birth certificate, because I didn't know what would happen if that burned down."
She also expressed her deep concern for the people of LA, sending her love and hoping everyone was safe. "I just hope everyone's doing well and I'm sending them all my love," she said.
The wildfires have wreaked havoc on the city, with thousands of homes destroyed and the death toll reaching 24, with many still missing. Osaka's home, purchased in 2022 after selling her Beverly Hills property, is near the heart of the destruction. The five-bedroom house was a special place for the tennis star, as she gave birth to her daughter Shai in the summer of 2023.
In addition to this personal crisis, Osaka also recently announced her split from the father of her child, rapper Cordae, after six years together. In a statement shared on Instagram, she confirmed they are no longer in a relationship but remain on good terms. "No bad blood at all, he's a great person and an awesome dad," she wrote, adding that their experience together has helped her grow and that her daughter is her "biggest blessing."
